Established in 2005 by the autograph enthusiast James Spence Jr., James Spence Authentication has garnered a sterling reputation for its autograph verification processes, having certified millions of signatures and cultivated an extensive database featuring close to one million autograph images. Following this acquisition, James Spence and James Spence III will maintain their roles in overseeing JSA’s operations, alongside Mark Pepitone, a co-owner who will take on the role of senior advisor, contributing his wealth of experience to the collaboration.
This strategic step taken by CCG, a company that was itself brought under the Blackstone portfolio in 2021, comes in response to the increasing demand from collectors for a consolidated service that covers the authentication, grading, and encapsulation of autographed items. While CCG has previously provided authentication services through its Signature Series, a comprehensive authentication and grading service dedicated to autographs was an area where there was room for growth, a void that JSA is poised to fill.
